Sarah Mitchell

Marine Insurance Editor

Sarah Mitchell is the lead editor of Best Boat Insurance Australia. With more than ten years working alongside marine brokers, claims assessors, and underwriting teams across Australia's east coast, Sarah translates the often-opaque language of marine insurance into practical guidance that boat owners can actually use. Her work focuses on the questions that real boat owners actually ask: how much should I be paying, when does agreed value matter, what happens if I claim, and which insurer will still be there in five years' time? Sarah is not a licensed financial advisor - all editorial content on this site is general in nature and does not constitute personal financial advice.

How We Research Insurers

Every provider featured on this site goes through a four-step research process before we publish a rating or review.

  1. 1

    Product Disclosure Statement Review

We read every provider's PDS in full, mapping standard inclusions, exclusions, optional extras, sub-limits, and excess structures. This is the source of truth for what is actually covered - not the marketing copy.

  2. 2

    Premium Benchmarking

We obtain like-for-like quotes for standardised vessel profiles across major Australian postcodes - high-density urban, regional coastal, inland - to surface real pricing differences instead of headline averages.

  3. 3

    Claims Research

We track Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) data, internal dispute resolution timelines, and customer-reported experience signals from independent review platforms. Claims is where insurers earn or lose their reputation, so we weight this heavily.

  4. 4

    Quarterly Re-evaluation

Ratings are not "set and forget". We re-run the full process every quarter and update the rating, premium ranges, and review pages accordingly. Last review date is published on every provider page.

Editorial Independence

We earn money through affiliate partnerships with insurance providers - when you click a "Get Quote" link and obtain a quote, we may receive a commission. This is the standard business model for independent comparison sites in Australia.

Crucially, this commercial relationship has no influence on our editorial content. We do not adjust ratings, hide negative findings, or rearrange comparison tables based on commission rates. Our methodology is identical across providers we partner with and providers we don't. If a provider with the highest commission ranks last on coverage, they rank last in our comparison.

Every page that contains affiliate links is clearly labelled. Every provider review includes the standard general advice warning. And we will publish negative findings on partner providers without hesitation if the research supports it.
