Boat Insurance in Queensland

Queensland runs the highest recreational-boat registration count in Australia and sits squarely inside the East-Coast cyclone zone. Expect cyclone-season loadings on premiums and check that your PDS covers haul-out when a category system is forecast. Of the 12 mainstream Australian boat insurers we audit, 11 operate in Queensland — Suncorp is the exception with a TMD restricted to trailered boats only.

Available Cover

Which insurers offer boat insurance in Queensland?

Almost all mainstream Australian boat insurers operate in Queensland. Two specific facts every QLD buyer should know before shortlisting:

  • Suncorp's Target Market Determination restricts the boat insurance product to trailered boats only — Queensland yacht owners with moored vessels are outside Suncorp's target market.
  • RACQ also distributes boat insurance to Queensland members, but we have not yet audited the RACQ PDS. Our review will publish at /reviews/racq when the audit is complete.

Restricted in QLD

Suncorp Boat Insurance excludes moored boats per its TMD — QLD yacht owners on swing or pile moorings should look elsewhere.

Licensing

Maritime Safety Queensland — licence and rules

Maritime Safety Queensland is the state regulator for recreational boating. Two licences cover most owners:

  • Marine Licence Indicator — required to operate a powered craft capable of more than 4.5 kW (around 6 horsepower) in Queensland waters. Earned via a recognised competency course.
  • Personal Watercraft Licence — separate licence required to operate jet skis and other PWCs beyond a learner stage.

Most boat insurance policies make the operator licence a condition of cover. Operating an insured vessel without the relevant valid licence is a standard exclusion across every mainstream Australian PDS in our comparison set.

The QLD-Specific Cost Driver

Cyclone zone — why Queensland boat insurance loads in summer

Queensland sits inside the East-Coast cyclone zone, with the highest exposure roughly from the Tropic of Capricorn northward. Cyclone season runs November to April. Three insurance implications follow:

  • Storage-location loadings. Brisbane / Gold Coast / Sunshine Coast attracts smaller cyclone loadings than Whitsundays / Cairns / Townsville. Premiums on a northern-QLD-stored yacht can be materially higher than the same yacht in Brisbane.
  • Haul-out clauses. Most PDSes require the vessel to be secured or hauled out within a specified time after a named cyclone reaches a defined distance. Failing to comply with the haul-out clause is a standard exclusion at claim time.
  • Specialist nuance. Marine specialists (Pantaenius, Club Marine, Nautilus Marine) handle cyclone clauses with more granularity than mainstream brands — specialist PDSes typically publish exact distance triggers and standard-of-care language.

Where You Cruise

Popular Queensland cruising grounds — and what they mean for cover

  • Moreton Bay (Brisbane)

Sheltered, low cyclone exposure for southern Moreton Bay, high vessel density. Theft loading meaningful in the busy marinas; cyclone loading lighter than further north.

  • Gold Coast Broadwater

Highest PWC density in Australia. Theft / wake-related claims loading. Specialist insurers (Club Marine, Nautilus) common choice; Pantaenius has a Gold Coast office at the Boat Works for yachts.

  • Sunshine Coast

Family-cruising market. Mooresville Marina, Mooloolaba. Mainstream insurers (NRMA, GIO, Youi — Youi HQ is Buddina) well-suited; cyclone loading mid-range.

  • Whitsundays / Hamilton Island

Inside the high cyclone zone. Haul-out clauses essential. Specialist marine insurers preferred — Pantaenius, Club Marine and Nautilus Marine all handle Whitsundays-stored vessels.

  • Cairns / Townsville

Highest cyclone exposure in our comparison set. Outer Reef cruising requires 250 nm offshore limit (Club Marine, Nautilus, New Wave Marine Lloyd's, Pantaenius).

  • Outer Great Barrier Reef

Beyond 200 nm from coast in many places — mainstream 200 nm policies will NOT cover. Use a 250-nm specialist for any outer-Reef voyage planning.

Jet Ski Insurance QLD

Jet ski insurance in Queensland

Queensland is the highest jet ski / PWC market in Australia by volume — the Gold Coast Broadwater, Moreton Bay and the Whitsundays all sustain busy PWC fleets. Of the 12 insurers we audit, 5 cover jet skis on the same policy as a boat:

How Premiums Work in QLD

What changes the cost of boat insurance in Queensland

Queensland boat insurance premiums are built from the same seven cost drivers that apply nationally — sum insured, hull length, storage, owner history, use pattern, cover tier and bundling. Three QLD-specific dimensions push premiums above or below the national base:

  1. 1. Cyclone-zone storage. North of Bundaberg, named-event loadings apply. Compliance with haul-out clauses is essential.
  2. 2. Bundling. Suncorp Group (GIO, Suncorp, Apia, Shannons) is heavily distributed in Queensland. RACQ multi-policy discounts available for QLD members. Pantaenius's Gold Coast office serves the yacht-bundling market.
  3. 3. Offshore-cruising scope. Owners who voyage to the outer Great Barrier Reef beyond 200 nm need the specialist 250 nm marine brands. Mainstream brands' policies become void beyond 200 nm.

Per CLAUDE.md §4.3 (ASIC s12DA compliance), this site does not publish fabricated "average Queensland boat insurance" dollar figures. Run live quotes with at least 3 of the 11 active insurers for an honest premium.

Our PDS-verified comparison page shows every insurer's offshore limit, cyclone-clause wording, valuation pathway and personal-effects depth in one table. Filter to specialist marine brands if you cruise the outer Reef; consider mainstream generalists if you bundle with home or car cover.

Queensland Boat Insurance FAQ

Which insurers offer boat insurance in Queensland?

Of the 12 mainstream Australian boat insurance brands we audit line-by-line against the current PDS, 11 operate in Queensland and accept QLD-stored vessels. Suncorp's Target Market Determination is the exception — Suncorp Boat Insurance is for trailered boats only, which excludes most Queensland yacht owners with moored vessels. The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) also distributes boat insurance to its members in QLD; we have not yet audited the RACQ boat insurance PDS and will publish that review when complete.

What is the Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) licence requirement?

Maritime Safety Queensland (msq.qld.gov.au) is the state regulator for recreational boating. A Marine Licence Indicator is required to operate a powered craft over 4.5 kW (about 6 horsepower) in Queensland waters. A separate Personal Watercraft Licence is required for jet skis and other PWCs. Both licences require a recognised competency course. Most boat insurance policies require the operator to hold the relevant valid licence at the time of an incident — operating without a licence is a standard exclusion.

Why is Queensland boat insurance more expensive in cyclone season?

Queensland sits inside the East-Coast cyclone zone (roughly the Tropic of Capricorn northward). Cyclone-season storage from November to April creates a meaningful loss-cost loading on Queensland-stored vessels, and most mainstream PDSes attach haul-out or secure-storage clauses that activate when a named cyclone is within a defined radius. Practical implications: brisbane and southern QLD storage attracts smaller loadings than Whitsundays / Cairns / Townsville; haul-out compliance is essential during cyclone watches; some specialist PDSes (notably Pantaenius and Club Marine) handle cyclone clauses with more nuance than the mainstream brands.

Does jet ski insurance in QLD work the same as boat insurance?

Personal watercraft (PWC) cover is more restricted than boat cover. Of the 12 insurers we audit, 5 cover jet skis on the same policy as a boat: Club Marine (rated to 70 knots), Youi, QBE (with under-25 operator exclusion), CGU (with conditional storage), RAC, New Wave Marine. Nautilus Marine offers a separate Personal Watercraft Insurance PDS. The remaining brands (NRMA, GIO, Suncorp, RACV, Pantaenius) do not cover PWCs. See our jet ski insurance guide for the full PWC-specific framework.

Which insurers are best for Whitsundays or Great Barrier Reef cruising?

Owners cruising the outer Reef or Whitsundays need to check the offshore navigation limit on every quote. Most mainstream insurers cap cover at 200 nautical miles from the Australian mainland; specialist marine brands (Club Marine, Nautilus Marine, New Wave Marine Lloyd's product) extend to 250 nm. The 50 nm difference matters for any voyage to the outer Reef beyond 200 nm offshore. Pantaenius — with a Gold Coast office at the Boat Works — also handles international cross-border cover for owners who voyage to the Pacific or beyond.

Is RACQ boat insurance any good?

We have not yet audited the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) boat insurance PDS. RACQ is the Queensland equivalent of NRMA (NSW), RACV (Victoria) and RAC (WA), and distributes boat insurance to its members. When we complete the PDS audit, we will publish a full review at /reviews/racq scored against the same four-dimension methodology used for our other reviews. In the meantime, Queensland members should compare RACQ's PDS directly against the equivalent products from Club Marine, GIO, Suncorp and Youi.
